The all-new 2016 BMW M2, the smallest BMW high-performance coupe to wear the "M" badge, will arrive at BMW dealerships in the U.S. in spring 2016, BMW of North America said on Tuesday.

Pricing will be announced closer to the car's market launch.

While BMW is not providing estimates, the M2, which is based on the BMW 2 Series, likely will be positioned as a serious M product but with a relatively affordable price tag designed to lure younger buyers into BMW showrooms.

The rear-wheel-drive M2 takes aim at such high-performance offerings as the Audi TTS, Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG and Porsche Cayman and replaces the short-lived BMW 1 Series M coupe.

Details on the M2 include a new twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that delivers 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque, along with a standard auto stop-start function designed to conserve fuel.

The EPA has not rated the M2.

A lightweight aluminum M Sport suspension and four tailpipes add to the M2's performance credentials.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission is optional.

Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The M2 sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission and 4.2 seconds with the optional transmission.

Optional driver-assistance systems include collision warning, pedestrian warning and lane-departure warning.

A GoPro app lets drivers use a GoPro camera to film fast laps at a racetrack.

Exterior paint choices include Long Beach Blue metallic, Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic and Mineral Gray metallic.

The cabin features sport seats in black Dakota leather with blue stitching.
